Explore the Art of Chip Machine
Chip Machine is the experimental music project of Montreal-based composer Jaian
Mascotto, exploring the spaces between electroacoustic, ambient, and electronic sound.
Originally rooted in retro-inspired chiptune, the project has evolved into a multidimensional sound
laboratory incorporating modular synthesis, algorithmic composition, field recordings, and
immersive soundscapes. Composed entirely in a home studio, Mascotto's approach emphasizes
textural density, spatial depth, and the interplay between organic and synthetic materials
through long-form drones, granular transformations, and spectral processing.
Drawing from academic electroacoustic composition (BFA, Concordia University) and film
scoring (Graduate Diploma, UQAM), the project fuses music studio discipline with spontaneous
experimentation. Across fifteen+ releases, from The Electroacoustic Album to the self-titled Chip Machine (2025),
released on German label Attenuation Circuit, has earned international recognition.
Notable projects include Laptop Orchestra (2019), inspired by performances with the Concordia Laptop Orchestra, and the Chip Machine Dronecast (2021), which has amassed over 250,000 streams with hour-long generative drone compositions. In 2026, Mascotto embarked on an ambitious daily release experiment, creating and releasing 365 ambient tracks throughout the year as the new iteration of the Chip Machine Dronecast. Produced in a concentrated 19-day creative sprint, this series explores daily variations in drone, texture, and atmosphere, from technical spatial soundscapes to darker experimental terrain. The complete 365-track cycle represents one of the most extensive single-year ambient music projects in independent electronic music, demonstrating Mascotto's commitment to pushing the boundaries of electroacoustic music composition and high-volume creative output.
